The difference that marked the Mexican Revolution is that it was organized around the charismatic figures who led it: Madero, a Mexican predecessor of Gandhi, the legendary Zapata, a natural anarchist in search of a mythical paradise, the terrible Pancho Villa, thirsty for blood and justice. Carranza, the patriarch who led the fight through constitutional paths, General Calles, enemy of the Catholic church, and the humanitarian president Lazaro Cardenas. All of them were pushed by the desire to liberate, educate, protect and redeem the people. This tempting yet dangerous attitude still exists in Mexico, where the Revolution still holds a mythic charisma, and understanding it is the only way to overcome it.
